Use These Tips to Stay Afloat During a Flood

If you browse national news feeds, you will probably find multiple places that have experienced floods recently. In this country, flash floods are the most common severe weather disaster. In only two feet of water, floods are able to carry objects as large as a car.
In honor of FEMA’s National Preparedness Month (NPM), we would like to share five flood disaster preparedness tips to help you and your home survive a flood.

  • #1. Create a Plan – It’s of the utmost importance to have a family emergency plan. Once the plan is created, rehearse and review it with your family. To help our clients with this step, Paul Davis has a Get a Plan form you can print using the link at the end of this post.
  • #2. Build an Emergency Kit – Here are a few of the items you should include: a first aid kit, water (a gallon of water per person for at least 3 days), singal whistle, battery-powered radio, dust masks, moist towelettes, garbage bags, wrench, and local maps.
  • #3. Keep Gutters Clean – Clear debris from gutters and downspouts; to help water flow, it is vital that the drains are not clogged.
  • #4. Look at Flood Maps – Know the flood risk in your area and secure proper insurance. It is critical to know if you are in a flood zone. Please click the link at the end of this post to see flood maps in Albuquerque.
  • #5. Understand Flood Vocabulary – Know the difference between a flood watch and a flood warning. When a flood watch is issued, it means that there is a chance a flood will occur in your area. A flood warning means that a flood is imminent and that you need to take action.
