Be Vacation Ready! Prep Your House with these Tips from Paul Davis!

June 21 is the official start of summer, which means most of you will be breaking out the swimmies, boogie boards and beach umbrellas to gear up for vacation. While you’re busy laying out the perfect attire, don’t forget to prepare your house for vacation too. There are several important security and property measures to take before traveling to your summer destination.

Be Safe, Not Sorry:

  • Make your house look like someone is home to avoid break-ins, like stopping the newspaper or asking a friend to clean out your mailbox.
  • Check all locks on doors and windows and turn on the security system.
  • Turn on a lamp while turning off the remaining lights.
  • Alert your credit card company that you will be out of town.
  • Leave emergency contact information with a friend.

Property Preparedness for Vacay:

  • Unplug small appliances and electrical devices.
  • Make sure water valves are turned off to the sink and appliances, like the dishwasher and washing machine.
  • Place the water heater to “vacation mode” so that it doesn’t run as much and saves money.
  • Set the thermostat on 85 degrees, but no hotter to protect your furniture, plants and pets.
  • Run your kitchen sink disposal with vinegar or lemon to remove unwanted scents.
  • Discard any trash and get rid of perishable food.

Hopefully these few suggestions will assist you in feeling at ease about leaving your property and allow you to fully enjoy this year’s vacation.
