Safety Tips From National Fire Prevention Week

From October 5-11, 2014, National Fire Prevention Week will allow people around the country to learn how to prevent fires in the home. Below you’ll find a few tips that can help you with this.

Cooking is the #1 cause of fires in the home. Make sure you always keep an eye on food on the stove. When cooking, loose sleeves and other clothing can readily catch fire if they contact a hot cooking surface or open flame. Flammable kitchen towels and pot holders should be kept away from your oven or stove when they’re not in use. Make sure you have an easily accessible fire extinguisher in your kitchen.

Functional smoke detectors can be lifesavers. According to a report released in 2014, the National Fire Prevention Association found that 60% of fatalities from residential fires occur in homes with either non-working or missing smoke detectors. According to the NPFA, smoke alarms that don’t work usually have dead, missing, or disconnected batteries. Today is the perfect time to test all of your smoke detectors to ensure that they work.
