Get Your House in Shape for Fall to Prevent Property Damage

During the fall, the potential for water damage, storm damage and fire damage escalates and the team at Paul Davis Restoration of New Mexico wants to make sure you are ready for it. We’ve put together a list of ideas that can help you avoid dangerous property damage in the fall.

Make sure everything is dry. Look at your caulking near exterior doors and windows and repair anywhere you see damage. If you notice gaps in places where wiring or pipes enter the home, these should be caulked as well. Keeping water out of these spaces can prevent water damage and mold formation.

· Prevent damage to your roof. Look around your property for tree branches, especially any that overhang the roof. These should be removed by professionals if they are above the first story of your house.

· If your house has a wood-burning fireplace, have your firebox and chimney inspected before you put it to use this year. Burning wood can create a buildup of creosote, which can cause a major chimney fire if not kept in check.

· If there are any missing shingles or other damage to the roof, have repairs made promptly. We suggest using binoculars to take a preliminary look, and contact an experience roofing contractor when repairs are necessary. Not attending to a leaking roof can lead to structural problems and other major issues in the future.
